Toronto FC has looked very impressive the past 3 games. With two comfortable wins over Vancouver Whitecaps and a win over Montreal, TFC finds themselves in a solid position at the top of the Eastern Conference. Toronto FC is in a rhythm and finally is playing the attractive soccer we are accustomed to seeing. There are three main takeaways for their success.

The Rise of Pablo Piatti

The presence of Pablo Piatti injects a massive boost in the TFC attack. He scored an absolute rocket in the first game against the Whitecaps. Definitely, one for the highlight real. Not to mention, the link up play with TFC talisman Alejandro Pozuelo has been nothing short of spectacular to watch. The Reds completely controlled the last 3 games and the possession thanks to Pozuelo and Piatti. The possession has been over 60% in all 3 games.

The Organized Defending

After the MLS is Back tournament, the CB pairing of Mavinga and Gonzalez has been lights out for opposing offences. The organization and structure has improved exceptionally over the past 3 games. In that span, Toronto FC have not allowed a goal! Hopefully, Mavinga and Gonzalez can keep this up forever. In addition, the play of Auro Jr. must be taken into account. The Brazilian fullback has really stepped up during the past 3 games. It is a breath of fresh air to see this production from our backline considering all the headaches TFC have had in the past.

There is Only One Alejandro Pozuelo

Of course, the biggest factor for most of Toronto’s goals is Alejandro Pozuelo. With 1 goal and 2 assists so far, Pozuelo makes the play of everyone around him that much easier. TFC have found a groove with a 4-4-1-1 formation that head coach Greg Vanney has implemented. Every attack runs through Pozuelo in this type of formation and it has been a massive success so far. The future looks very promising for the Reds if they can continue this style of play. It would be interesting to see Altidore in this formation as well.
