Who is Ifunanyachi Achara?

With the 25th overall pick, in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, Toronto FC selected the one and only, Ifunanyachi Achara.  Achara spent four seasons at Georgetown University and last year lead them to a NCAA National Championship.  Born in Enugu, Nigeria, the TFC forward’s journey has been an uphill battle. Bothered by injuries and setbacks, his health was a big concern for many. But, if anyone was capable of overcoming it, it was him.

The Preseason

Achara made an absolute statement in the preseason leading up to the 2020 MLS season. With 3 goals in 4 games, it was almost impossible to not keep your eye off him if you were TFC management. The best goal that comes to mind was the delicate chip against LAFC.  TFC Head Coach Greg Vanney had nothing but positive comments for his performance during the preseason. “Achara has been a very interesting addition since he arrived.” “He’s a smart player, moves nicely with the ball, he’s not afraid of any situations.”

The Signing

On February 21st, 2020, it was official. After the stellar preseason, Toronto FC made sure Achara had a role to play signing the forward. This moment meant everything to Achara. He worked so hard to be in the position he is in today.

The Debut

Achara’s debut for Toronto FC was something out of a Hollywood movie. He found out he was playing only hours before kickoff and the rest was history. Achara scored a goal that got disallowed in the first half and then scored a late goal all in his debut. For the re-cap of TFC’s game, check out the article below written by Niko Moniz.
