The Maple Leafs defeated the Sabres 5-3, keeping their great run going. The Leafs have now won four of their last five games. This win puts the Leafs in a playoff spot at the moment, only one point back of the Sabres.

Goal Of The Year?

Matthews had himself a night once again against the Sabres, scoring twice in the second period. The second goal however has everyone talking, as Matthews scored an unbelievable goal. Late in the second period, as the Leafs entered the Sabres zone, Matthews makes an amazing move, then puts a backhand shot into the net past not only the Sabres goalie but also Dahlin who was blocking the net.

Matthews scored his 20th and 21st goal of the season. Matthews joined Maple Leafs legend Dave Keon as the only two players in franchise history to start their careers with four 20 goal seasons.  This was also his 25th multi goal game of his career and his 11th goal in 13 games against Buffalo.

Standing Tall

Once again the Leafs’ struggles in the third period continued. The Sabres were able to score three times in the third. However, unlike against the Flames, the Leafs were able to re-group. After Buffalo scored their first of the game, Barrie made a great outlet pass which sprung Timashov on a break-away, scoring his third of the season.

The Sabres would continue to put pressure on the Leafs. Even after conceding two more goals the Leafs kept plugging away. In the final minutes of the game as the Sabres pulled the goalie while on the powerplay, Mikheyev made a fantastic move at the blue line to steal the puck and put it into the empty net, sealing the win.

Good Old Home Cooking

Eight players were on the score sheet for Toronto. Matthews, Barrie and Gauthier had two point nights. This was Gauthier’s second straight game with a goal after being a healthy scratch for four games. The goal also gives Gauthier a new career high in a season and it was his second career multi-point game; the last also being against the Sabres.

Marner also continued his hot streak as he recorded an assist on Matthews’ first goal. This now brings his streak to five games. The point was also his 250th of his career.

The Leafs will now have a few days off as there next game is not until Friday. It will be the first of a back-to-back, which will start on the road against the New York Rangers.
